A genetic screening test that analyzes fetal DNA in maternal blood from 10 weeks of pregnancy to check for genetic disease risks in the unborn child.

It is safe for both baby and mother since it uses maternal blood.

Check the risk of genetic diseases at the lowest testing cost in the country.

Anyone can easily receive the test at 300 medical institutions nationwide without age restrictions.

No referral letter is required.

What kind of test is NIPT?

ImageNon-Invasive Prenatal Testing (NIPT)

NIPT is a genetic screening test that determines the health of the unborn child and miscarriage risks during pregnancy with just 20ml of blood, in as short as 3 days.
By analyzing fetal DNA present in maternal blood using next-generation DNA sequencing, we check the risk of genetic diseases such as Down syndrome.

ImagePros and Cons

Pros

1Accuracy

Test the risk of 8 major genetic conditions (including Down syndrome, Edwards syndrome, and Patau syndrome) with a single blood draw.

[Explained by Doctor] Accuracy Comparison of Ultrasound, Combined Test, and NIPT for Down Syndrome

2Safe & Simple

No risk of miscarriage; 100% safe for both mother and unborn child. Easy testing is done via 20ml blood draw at over 300 clinics nationwide, avoiding the need to visit far-off hospitals.

3Early Testing

Available from 10 weeks of pregnancy, giving families time for discussion and emotional preparation in case high-risk conditions are detected.

[Explained by Doctor] Why Testing Labs Do Not Conduct NIPT After 16 Weeks

Cons

1Screening Test

Since it is a "screening test to check the risk of specific genetic conditions as a clinical study," there are limits to its precision, and it cannot provide a final diagnosis.*1

To confirm the presence of conditions, a confirmatory diagnosis at a medical institution is required.

2High Cost

Due to advanced technology like NGS next-generation sequencers, the test cost is higher than conventional ultrasound. If risk of chromosomal abnormalities is found, additional fees apply for counseling and confirmatory testing.

[Explained by Doctor] NIPT Testing Methods Using Next-Generation Sequencers

3Limited Test Items

Tests only for specific genetic disease risks related to chromosomal abnormalities. Thus, risks outside the test items cannot be checked.

Separate counseling and confirmatory testing must be discussed with your obstetrician.*2

*1: Unlike amniotic fluid or chorionic sampling performed at hospitals for confirmation, this is a screening test that evaluates the risk of specific genetic conditions (such as Down syndrome) as "high risk," "low risk," or "indeterminate." A "high risk" result indicates a high possibility of the condition, not that the fetus definitely has it. A "low risk" result indicates a low possibility, not that the fetus definitely does not have it. An "indeterminate" result means risk could not be determined.

*2: If a high-risk result is obtained, genetic counseling must be received. Confirmatory testing at medical institutions is mandatory to diagnose conditions.

5. Genetic Counseling

In the rare event of a high-risk result, genetic counseling and confirmatory testing (amniocentesis or chorionic sampling) are required.*1

We recommend counseling/confirmatory testing even if all items are low risk.*2

● Cost Support: We return half the cost of confirmatory testing and counseling.

*1: We refund half of the confirmatory diagnosis cost (amniotic fluid or chorionic sampling) and counseling fees upon submission of: a document showing pregnancy week was 10+ at blood draw, confirmatory test results, and receipt. There is no clinic restriction. Your primary obstetrician is acceptable. Counseling support is capped at 10,000 yen for one session.
*2: Counseling and confirmatory testing fees for low-risk or indeterminate cases are not eligible for cashback.

NIPT Cost Info

■ The day the sample arrives at seeDNA is counted as Day 0. Only business days are counted. Samples arriving in the afternoon add +1 business day.

■ NIPT applications are accepted only if all of the following conditions (①–③) apply:

① Pregnancy duration at blood draw is 10 weeks or later.

② Singleton pregnancy.

③ The pregnant mother does not have the genetic condition under test or active malignant tumors.

* The disease risk test is a clinical study (screening test) to check part of congenital conditions related to fetal chromosome number abnormalities.

* It is not a clinical diagnosis confirming fetal genetic diseases, and reports disease risk probability as high/low/indeterminate.

* Confirmatory testing at medical institutions is required to determine the condition, and this risk test does not directly lead to disease treatment.

■ An additional blood draw fee of 1,500–5,000 yen is paid directly to the clinic.

■ All fees include tax and round-trip express shipping for collection kits.

■ The testing duration counts only business days, excluding weekends and national holidays.

ImageFrequently Asked Questions

Frequently Asked Questions

Q.What is NIPT (Non-Invasive Prenatal Testing)?

A.
NIPT is a non-invasive prenatal screening test that analyzes cell-free fetal DNA (cfDNA) in 20 ml of maternal blood from 10 weeks of pregnancy using a next-generation sequencer to check the risk of chromosomal abnormalities such as Down syndrome (Trisomy 21), Edwards syndrome (Trisomy 18), and Patau syndrome (Trisomy 13). Since it is performed only via blood draw, there is no miscarriage risk unlike amniocentesis (1).

Q.How much does NIPT cost at seeDNA? What is the difference from certified facilities?

A.
NIPT at seeDNA Genomics Medicine Institute is 99,800 Yen (tax included, return express shipping included). Compared to the typical cost of 150,000 to 200,000 Yen at certified facilities, it is about 50,000 to 100,000 Yen cheaper. Furthermore, seeDNA includes basic 3 trisomies plus 4 types of sex chromosome abnormalities, all chromosome aneuploidies (1-22), gender screening, and talent/constitution tests for free. Certified facilities do not provide these additional tests (2).

Q.How accurate is NIPT?

A.
The negative predictive value of NIPT is over 99% for all test items. In particular, the sensitivity for detecting Down syndrome (Trisomy 21) is reported to be over 99% (3). However, since NIPT is a screening test and not a definitive diagnosis, a definitive test such as amniocentesis is required in case of a high-risk result.

Q.When can I take NIPT? How long does it take to get results?

A.
NIPT can be taken from 10 weeks of pregnancy onwards. Fetal cfDNA in maternal blood reaches a sufficient concentration for testing around this time. seeDNA notifies results in as short as 3 days after blood draw. Results can be checked on My Page, and a notification email is sent within 20 minutes after determination.

Q.Is there support if NIPT result is high risk?

A.
seeDNA provides three support measures in case of a high-risk result: (1) Cashback of half of the confirmatory diagnosis (amniocentesis/chorionic villus sampling) cost, (2) Support for genetic counseling fees up to 10,000 Yen, and (3) Additional cashback of up to 40,000 Yen if the condition is confirmed by definitive testing. There is no restriction on the medical institution for definitive testing; your primary obstetrician clinic is acceptable.
